'Fold Here'
My work often takes an everyday action or ritual as its starting point,
focussing in on the minutiae of our day-to-day activity and breaking
this down into step by step instructions. This has minifested itself
in many ways: a neon sign showing how to use chopsicks, folding instructions
printed on pay-and-display car park tickets and a performance giving
directions in knicker-folding. I enjoy working with interactivity, and
have a strong web presence which allows visitors to encounter my work
all over the world. Recently, I have become more and more interested
in taking my work outside and going for a walk (or run) to see what
I can find, which has led me to search for abandoned shopping trolleys
and to run alongside a railway line over a period of four days.
For teetotum, I will be revisiting and developing a piece of work where
I folded shirts and knickers as part of a performance featuring moving
image. I would like to bring together the various concerns in my practice
and create an interactive ongoing performance which will involve the
local community as I go out onto the streets and have a nosy at their
washing lines. As I research local folding styles, I will devise a definitive
folding sequence to be displayed as an illustrated wall-based work within
the gallery space and act as a guide to folders everywhere.
