Willow(Spray paint) OS grid ref: NY 114 380 Graffiti Willow trees on gable ends. Paul takes established vocabularies from ceramic printed ‘blue and white’ motif and pattern. Extracting and deconstructing, to provide the raw material he uses to create new forms and images. Paul’s plates, ceramic vignettes of contemporary landscape and large scale installations in the actual landscape are made in ‘traditional’ blue and white, which gives his work a particular resonance and familiarity that leans on a common recognition of its roots. In Willow Paul takes a domestic genre into a different media, on a new scale and in new locations, outside homes instead of inside leaving us to ponder will we still recognize its source? what will be our reactions to its relocation and re-sizing to real life tree scale? |
