Cyclus – In Four Scenes is an installation of four images describing a cycle of life or a cycle of experience from birth to death/assumption.The images have been created by digitally manipulating and mixing traditional painting with photography.
The idea behind Cyclus – In Four Scenes is based on the observation that people in contemporary society understand traditional paintings as art yet the majority is unable to read the myth and symbolical language behind the work unless doing further study. Today’s language and symbolism is defined by media, such as, television, advertising, magazines and newspapers rather than by old style painting. The original paintings, by D’Agoty, Rembrandt and Rubens, remain the foundation of the pictures; however, their story has been re-arranged to portray a fresh narrative with relevance to a contemporary audience in generaland my own life in particular.
The past ten years has been a time of fusion for Western culture. Different media, which used to be separate, have combined together. Art, fashion, music, advertising have been mixed within one context to become a new lifestyle experience. This fusion movement has influenced Cyclus – In Four Scenes. The combination of traditional with modern techniques creates a transition between old and new. The heritage of the past has been reworked to understand the present. |
