All about FRED

Something odd is happening around Cumbria. Can you really make a sculpture from your car park ticket? Did you expect to go home with an original piece of artwork when climbing Old Man Coniston? What did you really see out of the corner of your eye on the train? Who or what has been losing all their socks? … And just where did that enormous sheep come from?
The answer lies in FRED – the first annual Art Invasion in Cumbria.
For the past 3 months, 64 artists from Cumbria and the four corners of the world, have been busy preparing for the UKs largest and newest festival of site-specific work. FRED is a collection of artist-led events. Each of the 64 individual events has been initiated by the artists themselves and brought together by Fold. FRED has enabled artists from all backgrounds to create unique works of art specifically for different aspects of Cumbria. In doing so, FRED celebrates the rich diversity of Cumbrian life and demonstrates that there is more to the county than lakes and hills to inspire and influence art.
Instead of showing work in galleries, FRED artists have used everything from the trees, hills and walls to bus stops, trains and car park tickets to allow the most number of people to see their work and reach people who would not normally go to gallery exhibitions.
